Computing Center and local network

Catania site: The computing center consists of central machines and distributed workstations, running various operating systems:

During 2004 the the implementation and reconfiguration of the components which must guarantee the security of information systems have been continued. New facilities have been implemented.

A project for updating the INTRANET LAN to 1 Gbit of the Observatory have been approved by the MIUR within the PON funding of Objective 1 area. The funds will be available next year.

The principal specific activities can be summarized as follows:

OA Catania Web site
The observatory web page is continuously updated. A special page has been set up during Venus Transit on june 8th 2004 with a strong committement of the informatic group (Massimino, Costa, Giuffrida), and the collaboration of G. Leto and G. Cutispoto. The page has been set as main national page for different web cam and the high resolution images taken with the CCD Camera of the solar station of the Observatory.
The new implemented resources including information on Public Out-reach and Education and a service for the staff Avvisi al Personale with restricted access have been carefully updated. The on-line catalogue of the Observatory's library has been continuously updated and made available to internal and external internet users to the MPEC and IAU circulars. Moreover, the electronic versions of our preprints were made fully accessible through internet in collaboration with the library and scientific secretariat staff.

Training activities and participation to scientific meetings
During 2004 two important meeting took place in Catania, i.e.: the INAF System Manager meeting, and the APM Garr of Catania area.
Massimino and Costa anttended the " Advanced course on parallel computing and Scientific Applications" held from September 27 to October 2 at the Observatory within the activity of the MIUR project Problematiche Astrofisiche e alta formazione nel campo del supercalcolo . They have also have partecipating to the project DataGrid in collaboration with the Catania INFN section, following also tutorial courses.
P. Massimino has continued its collaboration in the project for the scanning and digitization of old photographic plates of the Catania Observatory collection, developing software tools for the images visualization and archiving.
Costa has attended the ADAS international meeting in Pasadena. Massimino has been appointed as member of the Committee Calcolo, Reti e Archivi of INAF. Specific papers have been published by Massimino and Costa (e.g. (), (), ()).
