Telescope automation

91-cm Cassegrain telescope: The new software "Asterix 2000", installed and commissioned in 2001 confirmed its stability and operation effectiveness. The tracking software developed within the Lab-view environment, has gone through new improvements.
However the major improvement to the telescope has been given by the installation a new movable secondary mirror holder that allow X-Y remote control and tilting. The best position of the secondary was set with the help of the Schack-Hartmann wavefront analyzer. As expected a decentering of about 1 cm with respect hole of primary mirror was found. With the new allignement the residual coma was reduced to less than 1 arcsec as specified by the manufacturer. Apparently it remain the more limitation of the image quality delivered by the telescope, because during the two test nights the seeing was found to be about 0.8 arcsec. As a result a clear improvement in the efficiency of the optical fiber link to the spectrograph, with the 100 micron fiber was acheived.

 
61-cm Schmidt telescope: The project of the mechanical revision has been critically re-examined and updated adopting a solution that do not require brake for moving the telescope in declination without angular clearance. A brushless torque engine manufactured by ETEL which does not need braking and cooling systems and is capable of operate under an unbalanced load up to 100 kg has been acquired. Drawings of the mechanical interface have been completed, and the construction of mechanical parts is nearly complete.
 
APT-80/1: A fault occurred in the telescope controller cannot be repaired because the necessary electronic components are out-of-stock. The whole acquisition and control systems has been re-designed, to enable the telescope operation under a more flexible new control hardware and software. The new system is based on brushless engines under control of a GALIL processor, the same as on the other telescopes, thus approaching a uniform control system for all telescopes. The software for the telescope pointing and tracking is loaded as GALIL firmware, thus making the control software on the PC dedicated to telescope handling and to data acquisition more flexible. Some test of pointing and measurement acquisition have been done with positive results, before the telescope had to be demounted because of the building renewing.
 
APT-80/2: The telescope is still at Marcon Lab waiting for the installation in the new building in Serra La Nave. In the mean time the guiding telescope has been completed.
