VO-TECH Project

AstroMD is a selected tool of the Italian contribution to the project VO-TECH started in January 2005. The VO-TECH project aims specifically at feasibility studies and design work aimed at integrating new software and grid technologies into the European Virtual Observatory (EuroVO). Key IT advances to build on are in intelligent resource discovery (ontology and the semantic web), data mining, and visualisation capabilities. These will be integrated via global astronomical interoperability standards coupled with the latest distributed grid computing services. Additionally this project covers design and preparatory work to ensure that data from the major european telescopes and facilities are fully accessible through the EuroVO, and where required, are able to offload mass scale computational processes onto the EGEE backbone.

Our Research Unit is part of the Italian partecipation in the VO-TECH project. The new product that will be realized is called VisIVO (Visualization Interface for Virtual Observatory) and starts from AstroMD. VisIVO will read data in VOTable standard format and will be integrated into the VO framework with the capability to have direct interaction with web services using SAOP/XML direct interaction. A collaboration with the CDS of Strasbourgh for the use of the VizeR web service from VisIVO, will allow us to develop this part in the first six months of 2005. Moreover VisIVO will use the grid services to execute exeternal tools for a given dataset visualized with VisIVO. At the end of this project, a VisIVO module will be developed as a service integrated in a VO theoretical data center. This new module will allow the user to obtain a preview and a pre-analysis of data.
