Important dates
First circular November 2005 Dear Colleagues and friends,
Rationale: Knowledge of the
dynamical and physico-chemical properties of the trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs)
is still scarce. There are a number of key questions that one would like to
answer guided by observations, models and laboratory data. Most of these
questions are complicated by the fact that the surfaces of the TNOs are
weathered by impacts, by the solar UV photons, by energetic particle
radiation and by thermal processing. - Which is the structure
of the classical Kuiper Belt region? - How such a structure
evolved from the epoch of the formation to the present era? - Which is the luminosity
function? - There is any
correlation between orbital parameters and spectral properties (colors)? - Which materials and surface weathering mechanisms produce the observed spectral characteristics? - Is the chemical
composition of the optical layers different from the internal layers from which
most of the species emitted by comets come? - Which is the
relationship between TNOs and other
objects in the Solar System such as Pluto, Triton, Centaurs, and short-period comets? Based on solar system formation models, we have
only a rough knowledge of the actual composition of the TNOs and it is unclear
whether they are similar. We also have only sparse information about the aging
of the observed surfaces and the relative importance of the various weathering
processes. The workshop has the primary
aim to address the above questions while trying to find new ideas for observations,
models, and laboratory experiments that will improve the knowledge of the
properties of those fascinating objects. SOC: Antonella Barucci (co-chair - Observatoire de

Hotel
Nettuno (the name is very appropriate!!) is
a four star hotel placed on the
(Ionian!) sea. About 70 double rooms have been reserved for the participants. Prices
are 110 euros (with breakfast) for double occupancy and 95 euros (with breakfast) for single occupancy. Meals can be
daily booked at 25 euros/meal. Who
wish to stay in a different hotel has to book the room(s) by himself. On the
web site a link to other hotels in Catania is given. We will
manage the booking of participants that wish to stay at Hotel Nettuno. WE
NEED TO KNOW, WITHIN 31 DEC 2005, THE APPROXIMATE NUMBER OF PARTECIPANTS, THUS
PLEASE PRE-REGISTER ON TIME. FEES: We do not yet know the amount of money that we may
obtain from sponsoring institutions. We hope to have NO REGISTRATION FEE. No social activities are scheduled. However
swimming (sea and pool) activities can be done freely at the Hotel. Many
tourist activities can be organized directly at the Hotel. SCIENTIFIC SECTIONS (JULY 2006): A
number of invited talk have been proposed and accepted by A. Morbidelli (France), H.F. Levison (USA), J. Fernandez (Uruguay), S. Astakhov (Germany), M.E.
Brown (USA), J.M. Petit (France), K. Noll (USA), N. Pexinio (Portugal), C. Trujillo (USA), D.P.
Cruikshank (USA), J.A. Stansberry (USA), A. Stern (Usa), D. O'Brien (France), A. Coradini (Italy), R. Brunetto
(Italy), M.H. Moore (USA), J.F. Cooper (USA) (see the web-page for details). We do
not plan to publish proceedings. We plan
to have a limited number of posters. The dead line for abstract submission and
final registration is March 31, 2006. Looking
forward to welcoming you in sunny Catania Ciao Gianni | Photo gallery Sponsors: INAF Physics and Astronomy Department, UNICT Telespazio UNICT |
